Abstract: The main aim of this project is to study the behaviour of fibre reinforced polymer sheets with different grating patterns and compare the results with the steel reinforcements which are presently used for backfill reinforcements. The tests to be performed include Sieve Analysis , Direct Shear Tests on different types of interfaces which include different grating patterns on steel and fibre reinforced polymer sheets. In brief the objectives of this project are as follows:- To determine the interface friction between backfill with crumbed rubber and Fibre reinforced polymer plate using small Direct Shear Test. To study the variation of interface friction of fibre reinforced polymer plate through different grating patterns. Presently steel reinforcements are used in backfills. These prove to be expensive and suffer from a major problem which is corrosion. Apart from that steel is also uneconomical due to it’s high cost. Fibre reinforced polymer may prove to be a better alternative for steel as it is light weight , corrosion resistant and economical in comparison to steel.
