This project is an attempt to find the ways in which the enormous quantity of solid wastes currently disposed off on land can be reduced by recovering materials and energy from wastes, in a cost effective and environmental friendly manner. In this thesis the present status of the city of Chandigarh has been studied. Looking at the present condition few proposals have been made and for that all the aspects of solid waste management have been taken into account. In the proposed system the main emphasis is on segregation, processing and landfilling. These few factors really hold the key for any good management system. The author of this thesis work hopes that this work will be taken for reference when the rules for the solid waste management will be made.
